Entrepreneurs make a plea for better accessibility of Haarlemmermeer

Because various pressure groups feel that the new Mobility Plan of the recently installed municipal executive does not pay sufficient attention to Haarlemmermeer’s accessibility, they have written a letter to the municipal council.
The gist of the letter is that the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer should be easily accessible for lorry traffic as well as for passenger cars.

The Chamber of Commerce, Haarlemmermeer entrepreneurs platform HOP, small and medium enterprises lobby group MKB Haarlemmermeer-Schiphol and the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW) stress that, due to the polder’s atypical structure, the car plays a pivotal part in the social and economic life therein.
The parties concerned point to the importance of accessibility by car in general, but also for road cargo traffic.
In the coming years approximately 15,000 new houses will be built in the western part of the polder, but new industrial estates will also be developed, whereas outdated locations will be revitalised.
Although the writers of the letter state that the municipality primarily focuses its attention on the accessibility per public transport and by bike, the Haarlemmermeer branch of the political party VVD has put the emphasis on the use of the car, in particular in its election campaign.
Therefore, this party may be expected to take the lead in literally giving car traffic in the polder all the space that it needs.
The composers of the letter also argue that first the accessibility should be up to par and only then should construction be started. Otherwise, traffic to and from economic centres in Haarlemmermeer, including Schiphol, will suffer.
